Boomers And Parents :: Independence
Most people want to remain in their home for the remainder of their lives. If your elderly parents are getting along okay at home and are firm about keeping their independence there are products and services to ensure that as long as their health does not deteriorate drastically they can stay there.
One thing you need to discuss and evaluate is your elderly parents home. Are the doors wide enough in the home to accomadate a wheel chair? Would it be a easy project to put an attractive ramp in place of the steps into the house? If their bedroom is on the second floor could it be moved to the first floor? Or would the stairway work with a chair lift?

If something were to happen to one of your elderly parents is their bathroom ready? If it could use remodeling, now would be the time to do it. Bathrooms that will accomadate some one in a wheel chair can look very beautiful and modern if planned ahead and not done in a hurry because your elderly parent has fallen and broke a hip or is just to frail or incapable of getting in and out of the bathtub. I'm in the process of putting in a new bathroom in my bedroom area that will work for my mother who currently has a suite upstairs. Right now having to walk upstairs seems to be good for her physically and she likes it. It can, if done right only add to the value of a home. There will be a lot of baby boomers in the same situation as their elderly parents are now in about 12 years.
